What Is Somatic Experiencing?
Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a body-based approach to trauma therapy that focuses on how trauma is held in the nervous system. When we experience trauma, the body and mind work to protect us. This can lead to patterns of disconnection, overwhelm, or feeling “stuck,” as the nervous system remains in a state of stress or survival.
Rather than focusing only on thoughts or memories, Somatic Experiencing gently helps clients tune into physical sensations in the body. By increasing awareness of these sensations, clients can begin to safely process and release stored stress, supporting greater regulation and a sense of safety in the body.
Somatic Experiencing is especially helpful for individuals seeking trauma therapy who may feel disconnected from their bodies or overwhelmed by past experiences. This approach can help you:
Build awareness of your nervous system responses
Reduce symptoms of anxiety, stress, and trauma
Reconnect with your body in a safe and gradual way
Develop a greater sense of grounding and regulation
At Brave Haven Counseling, Amy Bartley MS, LPC, EMDR Trained, SEP integrates Somatic Experiencing into her trauma-informed work alongside other approaches such as EMDR and mindfulness-based therapy. Her goal is to support healing in a way that feels safe, collaborative, and attuned to your unique needs.
Amy offers in-person trauma therapy in Richardson, Texas, serving the greater Dallas–Fort Worth area, as well as virtual therapy for clients throughout Texas. If you are looking for a trauma therapist in DFW or are interested in somatic, body-based approaches to healing, Amy is here to support you.
